Adding the finished woodwork was one of the most tedious, yet rewarding parts of the basement project. Sanding and staining the doors alone took me a month, and the trim took another 2 weeks, but once it's done it looks fantastic.
In taking on the woodwork, I started with the doors. I really wanted 6 panel, solid doors for the basement. Not only do they look great, and have a nice solid feel to them, but also they provide a little extra sound proofing.
I had four doors total to finish, and each door took me about a week. That's two coats of stain, and three coats of polyurethane. Since I could only do one side at a time, that worked out to 10 different applications.
In order to get each door done in a week I tried to get 2 coats on in one night, letting the first coat dry for four hours. The fumes were terrible. I found out in a hurry that I had to keep a fan running in the small basement window.
Once the doors were hung, I set to work on the trim. I used the fake stuff that I used in our office. I had had enough of staining. In the end it turned out great.
The picture to the left shows the bi-fold doors leading to the office.
