Looking back over the first few articles I wrote for this website, I realized that it's been two and a half years since I started this basement project. While there are still a few odds and ends to complete, getting the carpeting installed pretty much marks the completion.
After looking at a few local carpet retailers, we settled on an outlet dealer. They had Home Depot prices, with professional, full-time installers.
We picked out a nice durable berber style, with speckles of the three main colors of our basement - green, tan, and rust. The images on this page show how it looks after being installed.
Because of all the junk we had piled up in the office, and the storage area, we couldn't do the whole basement at one time. So for now we decided to just carpet the rec-room, home theater, and snack area.
The rec-room basically will be a play area for Kaylee. Her Christmas present this year is the large, ride-on train pictured to the right. She's only recently big enough to really control it, so now that we have a permanent place to put it, the timing isn't too bad.
I replaced all the legs on the sofa, love-seat, and chair with ornate casters. That, combined with the wheels already on the otoman allow us to quickly and easily re-arrange the room in case we need a bigger play area, or perhaps a second row of seats for the Home Theater.
It's really nice being done with the main area of the basement. The only down side with the new carpeting is that it makes the stuff in the rest of the house look pretty shabby. I have a feeling there will be more carpet going in our home sometime soon.
