Happy Holidays from the Builers!
In case you're wondering why I haven't written anything in a while, it's because of Christmas! It's pretty hard to get things done in December, and as usual Karla and I have been pretty busy.
Karla put up our Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving, but I wanted to wait until there were a bunch of gifts under the tree before taking a picture. So, of course, here it is the weekend before Christmas and it's only just now done.
On top of the holiday decorating, shopping, visiting, and general mayhem that always acompanies December, this year I also spent a week with a cold. And of course, as if on cue, Karla got it from me the very next week.
Being sick turned into a very surreal experience for me. While home sick in a Sudafed-induced daze, I decided to go through some of the toys that were stacked up in my basement from when I was growing up. I came across many little treasures that stirred up some memories from 25 years ago. The most vivid were my Legos!
I found a huge kitty-litter container full of what must have been thousands of Legos. In addition, there was a folder that contained every instruction booklet for nearly every kit that I can remember. I looked online and several of these kits dated back to the late 70's. I also did a quick scan on eBay. Many of these kits were getting some big bucks online - especially if they had all their pieces and included the instruction booklet. So I thought, "Hey, maybe I can make some money here!"
Well I just couldn't resist. I dug out the instructions and started building. Digging through that Lego box was litteraly a trip through my childhood. It seemed that everything I did or owned as a child ended up in the Legos. There were little notes, pieces of other toys, dried up band-aids - you name it!
And most unbelievable of all, nearly every piece was still there! Even with the broken pieces I could usually find each broken half and glue them back together. All-in-all I must have built close to 20 kits.
The only problem now is - I don't know if I can part with them! They look so good all lined up on my shelf. I guess I'll have to think about it some more. Maybe I'll sell some of the more "big-ticket" items and save a few keep-sakes for my own. Maybe keep some for when I have kids of my own...
Naw, they'd probably break them apart or lose half the pieces... on the other hand, I didn't when I was a kid...
